Restaurants with a View
LeBistro
When in search of views at Le Bistro-Newport, ask for table seven.

Enjoy great fall views -- and equally great food -- at any one of these six New England restaurants.

Le Bistro-Newport, 401-849-7778. 41 Bowen's Wharf, Newport, Rhode Island. ($$-$$$$) French country-style fare, light but not nouvelle: bouillabaisse, scallops meuniere, steak frites, and lobster offered three different ways. There's a cozy wine/martini bar on the third floor where you can also dine overlooking Jamestown and the Newport Bridge. Request table 7, if available. Open for lunch and dinner daily, brunch Sun.

The Waterfront Restaurant, 207-236-3747. 40 Bay View St., Camden, Maine. ($$-$$$) The wag who said restaurants always use a good view to mask mediocre food never ate here. Patrons keep coming back for the mussels steamed with garlic and white wine. Added bonus: You can trade toasts with passing yachtsmen. Open for lunch and dinner daily. Wentworth by the Sea, 866-240-6313, 603-422-7322. 588 Wentworth Rd., New Castle, New Hampshire. ($$-$$$$) Choose your view: Mill Pond and its wooded hills from the historic hotel's dining room with its frescoed dome ceiling, or the Atlantic Ocean from the Marina Bistro. Signature dishes feature local seafood. Dining room open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily; bistro open late May-early Oct. for lunch and dinner. Skyline Restaurant, 802-464-3536, 802-464-5535. Hogback Mountain, Rte. 9, Marlboro, Vermont. ($-$$) The 100-mile panorama of the Massachusetts Berkshires and the home-style cooking have made this a local institution since 1946. The all-you-can-gorge breakfast of griddle cakes or waffles comes drenched in real maple syrup. For lunch, try roast turkey or a burger, with Vermont apple pie for dessert. Open for breakfast (served all day) and lunch daily.

J's at Nashoba Valley Winery, 978-779-5521. 100 Wattaquadoc Hill Rd., Bolton, Massachusetts. ($-$$$$) From your table, indoors or out, you get a good lay of the land: 52 acres of apple, peach, and plum orchards plus berry patches. Choose delicacies such as fennel-crusted foie gras, blackened catfish, or barbecued rabbit. Open for lunch Tues.-Sat., dinner Wed.-Sat., brunch Sun. Bee and Thistle Inn, 800-622-4946, 860-434-1667. 100 Lyme St., Old Lyme, Connecticut. ($$$$) This riverside 1756 inn and restaurant offers sophisticated American cuisine in four dining rooms. Brunch on the porch overlooking the sunken garden is bliss. Dinner favorites include gnocchi, filet mignon, rack of lamb, and creme brulee. Open for lunch Wed.-Sat., dinner Wed.-Mon., brunch Sun.
